Holmdel Community Information
Holmdel Township is a rural suburban community located in Monmouth County in central New Jersey and is in close proximity to the Navesink River and Sandy Hook Bay. The Township covers 17.9 square miles and the estimated population is 17,500. Although Holmdel is only an hour south of New York City, the community is surrounded by beautiful wooded areas, pristine lakes and streams.
Holmdel offers a variety of real estate options for buyers and investors to choose from, with single-family homes making up the majority of the market, including estate properties. Also available are adult communities, lovely condo and townhouse communities, and easily accessible shopping centers.
History of Holmdel
Holmdel Township was formed by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1857. The town has come a long way from its humble agricultural origins. The earliest work on radio astronomy was conducted by Bell Labs engineer Karl Guthe Jansky in 1931, also in Holmdel. In 1964, Nobel Prize recipients Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson of Bell Labs discovered the cosmic microwave background radiation while working on the Holmdel Horn Antenna. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) provider Vonage Holdings, Inc., moved its world headquarters from Edison, New Jersey, to Holmdel in November 2005, occupying the building that formerly housed Prudential Property Casualty & Insurance. Today, Holmdel is known for its picturesque beauty, proximity to New York City and main highways, award-winning schools, large homes and rich history.
Holmdel Community
The community boasts a population of approximately 17,000 residents who enjoy the rural feel of the area, beautiful County Parks, excellent school systems, easy access to Atlantic beaches and an excellent quality of life. Some key points of interest to visit in Holmdel include the Holmdel Arboretum, Holmdel Park, the PNC Bank Arts Center, a popular outdoor amphitheatre concert venue that opened in 1968. Adjacent to it is the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Its many high paying jobs within commuting distance has led Holmdel to be ranked the #1 "Six-Figure Town" by Money Magazine and CNN for 2009. There are several historic churches in Holmdel Township including St. Catherine's Church, Christ's Church, and Old First Church.
Holmdel Recreation and Activities
To the east of Holmdel is the Jersey Shore which promises sunbathing, surfing and shell hunting on the pure white sandy shore, swimming in the refreshing salt water, and shopping in quaint seaside towns. Also within a two hour drive are Atlantic City, Ocean City and Cape May. There are several Township Parks which include Bayonet Farm, Cross Farm, Ackerson Park, Allocco Park, Phillips Park, Labbe Park, Ramanessin Brook Greenway, Mahoras Greenway Nature Area, Neil Waackaack Preserve, and Veterans Memorial Park. Additionally, there are several State and County Facilities including Holmdel Park , Telegraph Hill Park (which contains the PNC Arts Center and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial ).
Education in Holmdel
The Holmdel Township Public Schools are served by 4 public schools. Schools in the district are Village School, Indian Hill School, William R. Satz School, and Holmdel High School. Private schools within the township include the Roman Catholic Diocese of Trenton's St. John Vianney High School and St. Benedict School. Holmdel is home of The New School of Monmouth County, an alternative school based on the British Integrated Method, in which students spend three years in a "family" that covers three grades in a traditional school program.
